EMERGENCY SUB PLANS
The calendar on the left shows the schedule day-by-day. Scroll to the correct date to see the schedule. Individual items can be clicked on as well for details. Some of the details will show if the class will be dropped off or picked up, and what the routine is for bringing technology.
If the item says “duty” next to it, it means that I either have recess or morning duty. Mondays – recess duty is on the upper blacktop next to the basketball court. Tuesdays – recess duty is on the lower playground. Thursdays – morning duty is on the upper blacktop from 7:20-7:35.
I teach STEAM M-W to UTK-3rd and Art Th-F to the same classes, but bi-weekly. I also rotate extra prep to teachers. Usually these are scheduled on M & F the last class of the day, or on W-Th, first class of the day (sometimes needing to be picked up from the blacktop). I do not typically teach 4th and 5th, but they will occasionally come to me if they need a schedule change or there is a holiday.
I use color-coding for grades. UTK = pink, K = red, 1st = orange, 2nd = yellow, 3rd = green, 4th = royal, 5th = purple, and turquoise = my prep times.
Lesson Options
I typically leave detailed plans, but this page is here as a backup. Since I am an enrichment teacher and giving prep time to classroom teachers, then many of my activities can be repeated as challenges. If there are no plans, choose from any of these activities. Consider the age-level of the students when choosing. Click on the tab for information on each.

Drawing Videos
This is often what I do during the extra prep times.
- Go to Art Hub for Kids on YouTube. Choose a drawing video that seems age-appropriate (they do have pre-school for UTK and even K). You can also let students choose, but you could run into some issues with younger kids on choosing something.
- When students come into the classroom, they will come to the carpet. For drawing videos, I have the students come up by row to get a clipboard from the front of the room, go back to their table to get a plain paper (colored boxes on bookshelves) and a pencil, and then return to the rug.
- Have them put their name on their paper and flip over.
- Start video and pause between each step.
- When students are done with the step, ask them to put their pencil in the air to let you know if they are ready to move on.
- Once they have finished, they return their clipboard to the front, one row at a time.
- Some students may choose to re-try/re-do their drawing if they think they can do it better after having done it once. That is fine. Just don’t let them use more than two sheets of paper.
- Go back to their desks to color. Typically I recommend colored pencils or crayon for coloring. Marker is okay also. Students may choose to come up to the teacher’s desk to get a fine-line marker. That’s fine.
- If their is additional time, students can get out the “Brain Flakes” from their bookshelf and build something. They must be cleaned up first. I have them put their drawings on top of the bookshelves when they are done and before they start building. Other students may ask to “free draw” and that is fine.
- If the teacher is picking them up to return to the classroom, then the students can take their papers with them. If they are going to recess or lunch, I will usually collect them and put them in their drawer by my desk. I will hand them back later.
Engineering
I have sets of Legos and Keva Planks. Each table has their own set on the bottom shelf of their bookshelf. If you choose to do an engineering challenge, then you can first start with a read aloud book. I have many in the cabinet next to the closet (not the deep cabinets). You can also look up a read aloud video on YouTube before they build.
Follow directions below….or use the Spinning Wheel below to choose a build.
- Read book or show a video read aloud.
- Ask students for build ideas based on the book/video (or the wheel spin).
- Have the Table Captain get out the Legos or Keva Planks (don’t mix…just choose one).
- Students can work in pairs or individually.
- At the end, students MUST clean up by taking completely apart and putting small Legos back into the box first, then flat pieces on top. I also have a sparkly box of smaller flat panels they might use also.
- If they are using the wood planks, then they need to not toss them into the box.
- Check under the table to make sure there are no lost pieces.
Choice Board Art
I find that “Free draw” sometimes runs amok. Instead, I like to provide some options for students to choose from instead of just free draw. But, I will say that UTK and K sometimes do need just to draw what they want to because they need all the practice that they can get.
Below is a Wheel Spinner of drawing ideas. Spin the wheel and have students draw something that fits into that topic. I also do have some nature objects, like shells, that can be used. OR just choose to go outside and draw nature. For this you will need a clipboard, pencils, and papers to take into the courtyard, field, or other on-campus area.
